On May 26, TECHNATION convened public sector leaders and industry partners in Toronto and online for the latest GovTechON CIO Briefing, a flagship event bringing together Ontario’s digital leadership to explore the future of technology in government.
Centred around the theme “Securing the Future: AI and Data Sovereignty in Ontario,” the session focused on one of the most pressing priorities for the public sector: ensuring that as governments adopt AI and data-driven technologies, they do so in a way that keeps systems secure, resilient and trusted.
Delivered in partnership with Ontario’s Office of the Corporate Chief Information Officer, the briefing brought together senior government officials, CIOs, and industry experts to align on modernization priorities and share perspectives on the province’s evolving digital landscape.
Attendees heard directly from leaders including Mohammad Qureshi, Corporate CIO and Associate Deputy Minister, alongside key voices in AI strategy, cybersecurity, and enterprise planning. The session featured insights on Ontario’s approach to digital transformation, followed by an interactive Q&A and networking opportunity.
The presentations emphasized the importance of data sovereignty and responsible AI as public services adopt advanced technologies. Speakers highlighted the need for secure-by-design approaches, strong governance, and transparency to build public trust.
Peter Hinton (Director, Enterprise Data Stewardship Division) stressed the need for trusted, integrated AI and data systems, supported by industry partnerships. Annelie Howes (Director of Data Centre Operations), Keith Johnson (Director, Enterprise Planning & Project Delivery Services), and David Langille (Head, Cyber Security Strategy, Risk Management & Architecture) outlined Ontario’s approach to operationalizing AI, from building trusted foundations to enabling scaled delivery. They highlighted cybersecurity as a core service, embedded through design, automated guardrails, and secure shared platforms that support safe innovation.
