TECHNATION and techUK Welcome the UK’s Entry into the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)

MISSISSAUGA, ON (August 4, 2023) – TECHNATION, Canada’s national tech industry association, along with Tech7 sister organization, techUK, congratulates the United Kingdom on its entry into the CPTPP.

“The CPTPP has broad benefits such as enhanced market access to the United Kingdom for Canadian goods, expanded export opportunities for Canadian service suppliers, and government procurement opportunities in excess of those provided by the WTO’s Agreement on Government Procurement,” said Angela Mondou, President and CEO of TECHNATION.

“More than other sectors, the tech sector will gain significantly from these benefits, as these companies are more likely to have a multinational presence.  TECHNATION is also pleased to see specific CPTPP benefits for our members included in the provisions on intellectual property protection, subsidies and safeguards, competition policy, electronic commerce, and technical barriers such as standards and conformity assessment measures.   As an example, the provisions will facilitate the interoperability of data between tech companies which is an important objective of most forward-looking trade agreements.  For Canada, it is critical to access global opportunities and the U.K.’s accession to the CPTPP is an important step to accessing fast growing Indo-Pacific markets.”

« techUK welcomes the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP),” said Julian David, CEO of techUK. “As well as boosting trade, the agreement helps solidify the UK’s commitment to the Indo-Pacific region. This is one of the fastest growing parts of the world, with a consumer market of over 500 million people.

The CPTPP is another forum for the UK to set out a governance vision for digital trade in partnership with other key trade associations such as TECHNATION Canada and JEITA. techUK is excited to play a role in facilitating the expansion of UK tech companies into the region in the future. »
