Before stepping into the world of cloud technology, Lucas’s academic journey was unique.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Information Systems from Trent University before attending Niagara College, where he studied Computer Cloud Tech.
His double major may seem like an unusual combination, but it was Lucas’s determination to explore diverse fields that eventually led him to his passion for tech.
“When I was little, I wanted to do game design, and from there, it slowly shifted to computer networking,” Lucas explained.
But while school provided him with a foundation, it was his desire to get hands-on experience that motivated him to pursue an internship.
“I definitely feel like college taught me a lot, but actually going out on the field, having to fix and deal with server issues and computer software problems, that’s the best way to learn,” he said.
And Lucas did just that when he landed his internship as a Junior Computer Technician at Network Solutions Niagara in Spring 2021.
Lucas’s internship was an eye-opening experience. He was able to dive into real-world projects that gave him the practical skills school couldn’t.
“I learned a lot of things that I didn’t get in a school setting. For example, a lot of our clients used accounting systems, which I had no idea about before my internship. I also learned how to set up servers and cater services to specific client needs. That was fun to figure out because every client has their own unique requirements,” he said.
One of Lucas’s most memorable moments was setting up a voice-over IP system for a midwife clinic. “It was really cool, and everything went off without a hitch. I was a little worried, but it ended up working great. That’s definitely stuck with me.”
Lucas’s internship was more than just learning new technical skills. It was about building confidence and growing professionally. With his boss as his mentor, Lucas had the guidance he needed to take on new responsibilities. By the end of his internship, he wasn’t just an intern anymore – he was a trusted team member.
Today, Lucas credits his internship for providing the hands-on experience that made him the technician he is now.
Now that Lucas is working full-time, his career vision has shifted.
Initially, he imagined himself sitting in a cubicle at a large company. But his time at Network Solutions Niagara showed him that he preferred the dynamic and varied environment of a smaller business.
“I realized I never wanted the cubicle life. I love going around, meeting different clients, and fixing problems on-site. It’s a lot more fulfilling than sitting in one place all day,” he explained.
As for his future? Lucas has big ambitions. “I’m aiming for Vice President – maybe even President if my boss decides to retire!” he said with a smile.
But for now, he’s happy growing within the company that gave him his start.
For students considering an internship or co-op program, Lucas has one clear message: go for it.
“If you’re in the tech field, I can’t recommend an internship enough. The hands-on experience is so important – it’s what separates theory from reality,” Lucas shared.
He believes that stepping into real-world situations gives students a level of understanding that classrooms can’t offer. “You’ll face challenges that force you to think on your feet and apply what you’ve learned in ways you never imagined.”
Lucas also emphasized the importance of taking initiative. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Even if it seems intimidating, the experience you’ll gain is worth it,” he said.
His own journey proves that taking that leap can be life-changing, shaping not only your career but also your confidence and problem-solving abilities.
For students weighing their options, Lucas’s advice is simple:
“If you think an internship will help you grow and gain hands-on experience, go for it. You never know where it might take you – it could just change your life. College and university prepare you, but nothing compares to the scenarios you’ll face in real life. There have definitely been some long nights. The hands-on experience… I can’t stress enough how much that helps.”
Lucas Forcier’s story is a testament to the power of internships and co-op programs.
His experience in the Career Ready program didn’t just give him the skills to succeed – it shaped his entire career path.
From Junior Computer Technician intern to Cloud Service Manager, Lucas’s journey shows that with the right opportunities and a willingness to learn, the sky’s the limit.
For students thinking about their next steps, Lucas’s story serves as a reminder that internships can be a life-changing experience, setting them up for success far beyond graduation.
