Mark your calendars for November 20, 2020 for TECHNATION’s next Municipal Cybersecurity Best Practices Event. 

This will follow a similar format to our Cybersecurity Best Practices Event for SME leaders this past June. This event will include initial context-setting presentation from Ben Smith, RSA and four break-out sessions.

The break-out sessions will feature expert facilitators who will be expected to craft an initial discussion around best practices for municipalities for their topic area and then get municipal leader perspectives on what would work and what would across their contexts. 

Upon completion, you will be provided with the best practices from all three sessions to help guide your cybersecurity decisions and help improve your organizational cyber resilience.

Speaker & Facilitators Bios

Ben Smith is Field Chief Technology Officer (Field CTO – North America) with RSA. With more than 25 years’ experience in the information security, networking and telecommunications industries, he regularly consults on RSA’s security and risk management solutions. His prior employers include UUNET, CSC, and the US Government, along with several technology-oriented startups. Smith holds industry certifications in information security (CISSP), risk management (CRISC), and privacy (CIPT), and is an appointed member of the Cybersecurity Canon Committee. He has presented internationally at cybersecurity events sponsored by Gartner, FS-ISAC, SANS, IANS, CERT/SEI, RSAC, ISSA, (ISC)2, ISACA, Infosecurity, BSides, ASIS, InfraGard, HTCIA, SecureWorld, ISMG, SC Media, SIRA, RMA, IIA, MWCA, ICI and other organizations.

Ruth Promislow has extensive experience with data protection, privacy and cybersecurity matters including regulatory compliance, cyber preparedness, breach response and related litigation. Ruth works with clients to assess their risks and vulnerabilities, and their legal obligations regarding collection, use and storage of personal or confidential information.  

She assists clients in developing comprehensive policies, guidelines, and procedures to minimize exposure from potential attacks, and to ensure compliance with regulatory and contractual obligations. Ruth also works with clients to develop and implement effective incident response plans enabling clients to respond quickly to a data incident without creating further liability from incident mismanagement. 

Ashley is accountable for Tenable’s overall business strategy in Canada. He leads a team of cyber security experts in helping Canadian organisations address cyber security and risk management issues through Tenable’s solutions and services.  

Ashley has over 20 years experience in the IT industry. He started his career in a consulting role on IT Infrastructure and Security for enterprise customers. His passion for cyber security led him to managing the security program of a Symantec and Microsoft distributor for the Africa region. He continued on the cyber security journey at industry leading companies such as Rogers, Symantec and RSA in the last decade, helping customers across all business verticals in Canada. 

Along with a Masters degree in Information Technology from Cranfield University UK, Ashley also holds several industry certifications such as CEH, CISSP, CRISC and CompTia Security+. Ashley has been part of the Industry Advisory Board of Reboot’s “Privacy and Security Conference” and is currently an active member of TechNation & CCTX. He has also presented at Canada’s national security committee on the topic of cyber risk. 

Eldon Sprickerhoff is the original pioneer and inventor of what is now referred to as Managed Detection and Response (MDR). In founding eSentire, he responded to the incipient yet rapidly growing demand for a more proactive approach to preventing and investigating information security breaches. Now with over 20 years of tactical experience, Eldon is acknowledged as a subject matter expert in information security analysis.  Eldon holds a Bachelor of Mathematics, Computer Science degree from the University of Waterloo. 

Tyson has worked in both the public and private sectors over the course of his career. Starting in the Federal civil service, Tyson developed hands-on experience across the entire spectrum of issues facing Canada’s foreign and domestic threats. He worked closely with government agencies in Canada and abroad to collaborate and achieve successful outcomes.
Tyson spent the next number of years building and supporting enterprise risk management programs for multinational organizations in both financial services and electronics manufacturing. During this time, Tyson worked globally to understand and integrate regional legal and operational practices into a global corporate framework to support business success. It was during this period that Tyson obtained his Masters designation from The Fletcher School of International Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University. His thesis explored the contributing decision support factors for comparative country risk assessment by corporations.
Prior to his role with the Government of New Brunswick, Tyson led BrightPlanet, a US-based ‘big data’ pioneer, as its VP Business Development & Strategy. In this role, Tyson helped shape BrightPlanet into a successful member of the data & analytics ecosystem to support risk management across government and industry. This included a key focus on threat identification and cybersecurity initiatives.
Today, Tyson leads CyberNB in a non-profit capacity as it coordinates government, industry and academia to support cybersecurity in Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) across Canada. As Canada’s cybersecurity epicentre for critical infrastructure protection (CIP), Tyson is implementing a four-pillar strategy to grow innovation and commercialization across; Workforce & Skills Development, Trust & Compliance, Innovation & Infrastructure as well as Growth & Commercialization.
