This role is a strategic leadership position, currently remote.  There is an expectation that the individual in this role will be available to travel as required for face-to-face meetings, member and/or government partnership meetings along with strategic planning off-site meetings and events.

About the Role

We’re looking for an up-and-coming government relations mover and shaker. This is a great opportunity to work with some of the largest multinationals as well as leading-edge Canadian tech firms, and on files that are key to our nation’s economic prosperity.

As a key member of our Government Relations and Policy team, the Government Relations and Policy Manager supports TECHNATION’S government relations advocacy, including analysis of announcements and current issues for the industry, preparation of policy position documents, and coordination of member committees and working groups. The Manager also supports our Ottawa based industry events and general TECHNATION member engagement.

Working closely with the VP Policy and the Senior Vice-President, Government Relations and Policy to develop and deliver key priorities including advocacy guidelines, tools, and support; multi-year government      relations advocacy campaigns; and ongoing government relations activities.

Creates and enhances TECHNATION’s relations with all levels of government. Supports the building and maintenance of strategic relationships with officials at the federal, provincial and municipal levels of government, as well as other public sector institutions. Coordinates and prepares briefing materials for meetings, events, and projects, and acts as a liaison for government officials.

The Manager has a strong understanding of all three levels of government and the mechanics of how they function and have a keen interest in the political process and how it impacts industries, such as technology. The successful candidate is self-motivated, able to handle multiple issues and tasks at any given time, has a positive and upbeat attitude and enjoys working in a team environment as well as independently.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic and Advocacy Planning and Communications

  • Works with the SVP, Government Relations and Policy, to support a government relations plan that reflects and supports the central goals of TECHNATION and its
  • Facilitates conversations that enhance TECHNATION’s reputation and are of value to our members and key
  • Collaborates with TECHNATION leaders, members and key stakeholders to identify and promote research and activities relevant to TECHNATION’s strategic goals, and contributes to the tech
  • Makes recommendations on innovative approaches to disseminating information to members using emerging technologies
  • In conjunction with the SVP Government Relations and Policy, enhances the profile, image and reputation of TECHNATION with government and the public in support of TECHNATION’s strategic plan and advocacy priorities.
  • Contributes to white papers, reports, etc. in support of TECHNATION’s advocacy efforts on members’ behalf.

Government programs and environmental scans

  • Monitors and reports developments on issues as it pertains to government activity and the technology sector by maintaining contacts, including with parliamentarians and government officials, to share information.
  • Conducts research related to key issues as required.
  • Coordinates and tracks all meetings for lobbying purposes.
  • Prepares reports and presentations to TECHNATION members, and all levels of government

Member Committees and Working Groups

  • Coordinates meetings of the Cloud, Data/Ai and Procurement working groups, as well as the Federal and the Ontario Public Sector Business Committees (PSBC)
  • Drafts the agenda and slide decks for monthly federal and Ontario PSBC meetings, and corresponds with the offices of government speakers
  • Prepares briefing notes, meeting materials, letters and other items as required.

Relationship Management

  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with counterparts and other staff in partner organizations, and with other stakeholder associations.
  • Identifies opportunities for government officials to participate in activities with TECHNATION
  • Works collaboratively across TECHNATION to maximize alignment of government relations and communication strategies, messaging and programs, to deliver on TECHNATION’s advocacy priorities and goals.
  • Provides a superior experience for government and community contacts to ensure TECHNATION is the first point of contact for government by ensuring knowledgeable and timely responses, and appropriate follow-up.

Events and Logistics

  • Working directly with the Director, Events and Programs supports our Ottawa based GR&P industry events, and Toronto based as required
  • Manages speaker outreach and speaker confirmation for events

  • 1-3 years of experience working in government, or in a government relations function
  • Post-secondary degree, preferably in Political Science or Public Administration
  • Demonstrated research skills
  • Strong understanding of Canadian government and regulatory structure
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to represent TECHNATION in industry forums when needed
  • Proven project and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals holding different viewpoints
  • Advanced in the use of PowerPoint and other office software to assist with creating presentations and submissions
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a small team
  • Ability to provide support to and work with senior management with confidence
  • Willingness to take on diverse responsibilities and multi-task
