TORONTO, February 1, 2021 – In 2020, the Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources announced a multi-year investment under the Cyber Security and Critical Energy Infrastructure Program supporting the CIO Strategy Council work to produce a set of cybersecurity standards for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices to address vulnerabilities in our critical energy infrastructure.

The CIO Strategy Council has made notable progress by completing an analysis with stakeholders detailing the IIoT cybersecurity attack surface, threats, risks, and vulnerabilities. Developed in collaboration with Eaton, a power management company and leader in cybersecurity, the analysis considers IIoT device capabilities, deployment contexts, device claims, and supply chain among others. It will serve as an essential input into the development of a consolidated cybersecurity standard for IIoT devices.

“This comprehensive analysis is critical to the overall landscape and development of a consolidated Standard for IIoT devices within the utility grid. As an anchor partner with CIO Strategy Council, we’re pleased to lead technical collaboration to advance cybersecurity and compliance,” said Vladimir Gagachev, Manager, Codes and Standards, Eaton Canada.

The CIO Strategy Council technical committee on cybersecurity tasked with formulating the consolidated set of standards welcomes all stakeholders and the public to engage in and contribute to this critical work. These standards will specify minimum requirements for the design and operation of IIoT devices and systems to address issues such as security, safety, confidentiality, and availability.

The CIO Strategy Council invites device manufacturers, utilities, regulators, policy-makers, and other interested parties from across the country, to join the Council’s technical committee. For more information or any questions about the Council’s standards development activities, please contact Matthew MacNeil.

“Collaboration between sectors and associations is necessary to respond to evolving cyber threats. Our recent collaboration with the CIO Strategy Council is just another example of how our sector is protecting critical infrastructure by contributing to the development of standards for lloT devices in North America” says Francis Bradley, CEO of the Canadian Electricity Association.
